Blood Cell Mage illustration

Blood Cell Mage © 2019 Alisa Brandt
An illustration combining fantasy, medical/science content, and comic-style art. Inspired by various types of blood cells – red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets – as well as hematopoiesis, or the process of blood formation. The pattern inside the hat was created using the molecular structures of three important proteins in the blood: hemoglobin, albumin, and thrombin (PDB IDs: 1HHO, 1E7I, 1PPB). The insides of the sleeves are patterned like bone marrow, where hematopoiesis occurs. I imagine white blood cells like macrophages and dendritic cells could be quite useful familiars.
